No one has an entirely unbiased view of themselves and most of us struggle to consistently make the distinction between True Self (what we are) and Target Self (how we want to be viewed). Top performers, however, openly acknowledge this distinction and focus on maintaining an honest and accurate assessment of True Self. They develop the ability to identify their developmental needs and critique their work performance with greater scrutiny than that of those who will evaluate their work. These performers possess high levels of self awareness.
