Increasing Associate Motivation: Converting Taps to Music

As law firms emerge from one of the most destabilizing periods in the history of the legal profession, we find ourselves in an era of “productivity or bust” — a relentless focus on lawyer productivity and profitability. While it is certainly important for law firms to be focused on attorney productivity (annual hours billed), they should be equally concerned with accelerating their associates’ “speed to mastery.” For today’s associate, speed to mastery is the rate at which an associate actually masters any key performance competency.
